UBICATION:
              
Capachica district is three thousand eight hundred and nineteen meters above sea level. It is located to sixty two kilometers from Puno city. It has an approximately extension of one hundred and seventeen square kilometers (117.06 Km2). It has sixteen communities: Llachon, Yapura, Lago Azul, Ccolpa, Miraflores, Capano, Ccotos, Siale, Chillora, Isañura, Escallani, Toctoro, San Cristobal, Yancaco and Capachica. It has approximately 12,000 (twelve thousand) inhabitans.

WEATHER:

Capachica weather is cold and humid, it is varied because the influence of the Lake Titicaca and its thermoregulator efect . It has an average annual temperature of 8 to 12 centigrades.
Rainfall varies from 00 milimeters to 580 milimeters.
The rainy season is from December to March and the dry season is from April to November.

CARACTERISTICS OF THE BEACHES:

Capachica peninsula has several white sand beaches sheltered by rocky formations. Most of these beaches are located in Chifrón, Ccollpa, Llachón, Siale, Ccotos, Chillora, and Escallani, communities.

FLORA:

The Spanish broom and Kantutas saturate with their fragancy the air and shade the landscape with their red and yellow flowers.
CcolliCactus, Eucaliptus, Pine, Cypress, Yachajana, ancayo,Dahlias, Geraniums, passion flowers plants, Roses, Jahua collay and the algae Llaska .

FAUNA:

There is a great diversity of wild fauna like foxes, eagles, falcons, polecats, guinea pigs, wild rabbits, green lizards, and birds.

NATIVE SPECIES OF FISH: Carachi , Mauri , Suche and umants .

EXOTIC SPECIES: Trout and Kingfish.

ARTISANAL FISHING: Its is a cultural tradition that gives daily food to the family .

People usually catch black and yellow carachis, mauris, and kingfish.

TOURISTIC PROMOTION:

A lot of families from different communities in Capachica have rural houses foe accommodation; they also offer food to the national and international visitors.
The rooms are designed to give rural accommodation; you also can appreciate the beautiful landscape of peninsula.
Visitors can have typical food like quinua crumbs, papa huayco (boiled potatoes) queso kauchi (cheese soup).
To drink you can choose among salvia, mint or peppermint tea.
Through CEDESOS and INTERNAMERICAN FOUNDATION SUPPORTS (IAF) we are promoting, training and giving loans to families that are inserted in touristic activities.

BIODIVERSITY:

In Capachica we can see the biodiversity in the twelve types of chenopodiaceous, more than 120 (one hundred  and twenty) different kinds of potatoes , eight different types of  ollucos, more than ten types of ocas, several types and colors of cereals , more than six types of leguminous and more than one hundred different species of wild plants with different characteristics and uses.

CUSTOMS, MYTHS AND RITES:

TYPICAL FOOD AND DRINKS.-  The principal food is:
Quinua omelet, Chaulla thimpo, Kingfish and Trout thimpu (boiled fish, potatoes, and dry potatoes or chuño).
Grilled Kingfish, K´ispiño (small pieces of quinua flour mixed with fat) Pesq´e de quinua  (kind of quinua cream mixed with cheese  and milk) Llasca milk,
Illaco soup, Phata soup (boiled barley) Fiambre or q´o´q´awi (meat, potatoes, dry potatoes or chuño and sometimes some vegetables). Quinua crumbs Janká de k´ala grano (wheat) chuño phuti (steam dry potatoes).

HANDICRAFTS:

The customs are embroidered and multicoloured

  • Cloth caps.
  • Blouses.
  • Vests
  • Chucos or mantles.
  • Llicllas (colored mantles).
  • Scarves.
  • Jackets.
  • Chullos or caps.
  • Sweaters.
  •  Belts.
  • Undervest.
  • Blankets.
  • Stone is also done.

TYPICAL DANCES:

We have:

  • Qhaswa.
  • Kara  Machos.
  • Golpes.
  • Negritos.
  • Ispalla
  • Huancachus.
  • Cebada (barley) Huajtay.
  • Pulipuli.

CEREMONIES OR RITES

In Karrus watchtower on Llachon mountain there are Pre- Incas tombs and the Inca Cancha Santuary. This is a magic religious place. On February they venerate to PACHAMAMA or Mother Earth with special rites and dances here.
“AUQUIACARRUS” sanctuary is also here. This is a Pre –Inca sanctuary with magic power to control and rule man life, plants and animals.

FESTIVITIES

January 20: The three wise man of east. In Capachica town main square firewood is ……… by all communities representatives dances Kara machus  (a burlesque dance).
January 6: Saint  Sebastian is celebrated in Escallani community.
February 2 Candelary Virgen.
May 2: Capachica district anniversary.
May 16: The cross festivity in Ccotos community.
June 13: San Antonio de Padua festivity in Llachon.
June 16: Jesús sacrad Herat festivity in Yapura.
June 24:
The farmer´s day is celebrated with a native dances contest.
July 27:
Saint Santiago Apostol festivity in Capachica.
August 5:
Child San Salvador festivity in Capachica.

GROW DARK IN CAPACHICA

To watch the grow late in this area is a privilege. The sky majestic, the lake and the sun whose dazzling glare disappear in the infinite with our winds that caress the trees producing charming melodies and soft breezes that reveal the happiness to be alive and take the opportunity that life give us to appreciate our mighty nature.
